A year ago today, January 12, 2019, I wrote my first blog post, Flower Expressions. It was written from a place of renewal and optimism in my floral journey. The next day, I emailed Amy McGee to inquire about the possibility of arranging a floral intensive with Holly Chapple.

This Thanksgiving, I had the great pleasure of designing with roses from Rose Story Farm. One of my favorite podcasts, The Flower Podcast with Scott Shepherd partnered with Rose Story Farm for a giveaway, which I won.
Since another Michigan growing season is drawing to a close, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on designing with local flowers. I’m a big fan of the aesthetic local flowers provide, and designing with these blooms brings an arrangement to the next level. It’s not just the stems themselves that add this extra element, it’s the experience of knowing the full story, the answers to the 5 Ws.
Sunflowers continue to resonate for both retail and wedding customers. Many continue to ask for and seek out sunflowers. Right now in August, we are in this glorious time of year where all our sunflowers are locally grown and abundantly available.
First, these florists of Instagram, often studio-based, have evolved, elevated, and in general, raised the bar of floral design. I find inspiration in both their work and their willingness to share in an honest and real way. Second, through the process of posting our own work, I’ve found that I’m continually examining, evaluating, and evolving our style, design, and aesthetic.
Exactly one week before Easter Sunday, the ground was covered with freshly fallen snow. With Easter 2019 falling almost as late in April as possible, snow the week before, well into the season of spring, can be discouraging. But in a fortunate turn of weather events, not uncommon in Michigan, Easter Sunday was a lovely day.
…the participants had the opportunity to use their own creativity and personal style while selecting their preferred blooms and vase.
As I continue to work on seeking out new perspectives, I set out to find the joy in Valentine’s Day and use it as fuel to thrive during the holiday.
Not to be dramatic, but I think I have a touch of anthophobia.
Two decades later, which path I’m on has become increasingly important. Through the process of writing this blog, I hope to explore, learn, evolve, and be inspired.
